Supporting creativity, encouraging exchanges

Since the creation of the first International Comics Festival in 1974, Angoulême has become the unrivalled capital of the 9th art.
In the wake of this event, various structures – the National  Centre for Comics, the School for animated cinematographic skills - were born and have fostered the emergence of ongoing dynamism benefiting the town and the region.
LA MAISON DES AUTEURS opened its doors in July 2002 in order to provide positive support to image creators working in Angoulême or who would like to spend time there as resident creators.

LA MAISON DES AUTEURS has been established with the following purposes in mind :
> offering a working environment that encourages creativity, hosting authors with a view to completing a professional project,
> acting as a showcase for creative achievements in the fields of comics, animated films and multimedia, through exhibitions and events,
> providing a centre of technical and documentary resources,
> providing a forum for meetings and exchanges,
> helping to protect the author's status and to defend intellectual property rights in the field of artistic creation.

A committee formed by Jeanne Puchol, Emmanuel Guibert, Denis Lapière and Lewis Trondheim select authors on the basis of dossiers submitted. The successful applicants are provided with a workshop and, under certain conditions, with accommodation for a period of between three months and two years.

Since its inauguration, LA MAISON DES AUTEURS has hosted 74 creators, new talent or seasoned authors, coming from France and abroad : Jimmy Beaulieu from Quebec, the Americans Richard McGuire and Jimmy Johnson or the Russian Nikolaï Maslov.

With a view to providing additional financial support alongside these residencies, the National Book Centre (Centre national du livre) may give bursaries to freelance designers and scriptwriters : Jimmy Beaulieu, Nikolaï Maslov, Raphaël Meltz, Philippe Squarzoni, Sandrine Martin, Danny Steve all came into the La Maison des Auteurs under this scheme.
Since 2005, the association Beaumarchais has awarded a writing bursary for a short or full-length animation film : Nicolas de Crécy was awarded the first of these bursaries.
